Profile
The Materials Science and Engineering Department of the University of Ioannina was founded in 1999 as the Department of Materials Science and Technology. It was renamed the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 2009. Under the provisions of Law 4452/2017, it joined the School of Engineering of the University of Ioannina. Minimum duration of study: ten (10) academic semesters.
Mission and goals
The purpose of the Department is to provide high-level education, similar to that provided in respective Departments of Chemical Engineering-Engineering Materials in major Universities of the world, in all categories of materials, specifically in metals, alloys and steels, ceramics, glass, binders and structural materials, polymers, magnetic, optoelectronic and composite materials, and in biomaterials. Emphasis is also placed on the training of IT courses and computational methods, in applications of increased recent interest such as nanodevices, photovoltaics, photonic materials, electronic and magnetic materials, biomechanics, etc. and in state-of-the-art characterization methods and materials related to green energy, recycling and the environment.
