Highest Rating awarded to the University of Ioannina by the Hellenic Authority Higher Education
Accreditation Valid Until 2030

The Rectorate of the University of Ioannina is pleased to announce the successful completion of the accreditation of its Internal Quality Assurance System (IQAS) by the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education (HAHE). The University was awarded the highest possible rating of “Full Compliance” by HAHE’s Accreditation Panel, reaffirming the credibility and academic quality of our institution. The accreditation will remain valid until May 28th, 2030.

This result confirms the University of Ioannina’s unwavering commitment to the effective implementation of quality assurance mechanisms and to the ongoing improvement of its educational, research, and administrative functions. It reflects full alignment with the principles of the HAHE and the European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG), rewarding the systematic efforts made over the past three years.

The external evaluation was carried out by an External Evaluation and Accreditation Panel (EEAP) consisting of five (5) members drawn from the HAHE Register. The Panel conducted an on-site visit between March 16th and 22nd, 2025, including meetings with the Rectorate, academic, research and administrative staff, students, alumni, and external social partners. The Panel also visited classrooms, lecture halls, libraries, laboratories, and other university facilities and engaged in presentations, discussions, and Q&A sessions.

The final Accreditation Report was highly positive, highlighting the thorough preparation for the accreditation documentation, the practical implementation of internal internal evaluation procedures, and the professionalism, commitment, and collective effort demonstrated by all the participants of all meetings.

Full Compliance Across All Seven Quality Pillars

The Report addressed all aspects of the University’s teaching, research, and administrative functions. Notably, the University of Ioannina achieved full compliance across all seven thematic principles defined by HAHE for quality assurance in higher education:

  1.     Strategy, quality policy and target setting of the Institution
  2.     Programming and allocation of resources
  3.     Structure, organisation and operation of the IQAS
  4.     Self-assessment
  5.     Collection of quality data: Measuring, analysis and improvement, analysis and improvement
  6.     Public information
  7.     External evaluation and accreditation of the IQAS

Achieving full compliance across all seven thematic pillars, for the first time, is the result of the close and coordinated collaboration between the Rectorate, the Quality Assurance Committee and the Quality Assurance Unit (MODIP), the Strategic Planning Committee, and the Internal Evaluation Groups of the academic departments. The contribution of the wider university community was invaluable, with faculty members, researchers, administrative staff, students, and alumni actively participating in the meetings with the external panel members.

On behalf of the University of Ioannina, the Rector, Professor Anna K. Batistatou, extends her sincere thanks to all members of the university community for their valuable contribution to this successful outcome, and in particular to the President and staff of MODIP and the members of the Quality Assurance Committee for their significant role in coordinating the entire process. The University also gratefully acknowledges the valuable contribution of the Region of Epirus, the Municipality of Ioannina, the Administration of the University General Hospital of Ioannina, and all its external social partners.

The award of the highest rating across all seven quality principles, alongside the significant improvement compared to the previous accreditation in 2019, is clear evidence of the substantial progress achieved by the University of Ioannina. At a critical time for Greek public universities, this result highlights the dynamic potential of the institution within the national and European Higher Education Area. It also reiterates the validity of the University leadership’s strategic choices and the focused actions implemented over the past three years.

The Rector, Professor Anna K. Batistatou, together with the University Governing Council, the Senate, and the Vice-Rectors, remain committed to addressing areas for further development, shaping a visionary but realistic strategy, and consistently pursuing the University’s goals.

This positive accreditation result is not only recognition of accomplishments but also a commitment and a point of reference to further strengthening the quality of the University’s activities and processes. With consistency and dedication, the University will continue to provide high-quality teaching, research, and social contribution, further consolidating its position on the academic map of Greece and beyond.

Ioannina, July 3rd, 2025
