Co-creation event
University of Ioannina & Municipality of Delvinaki, Epirus
31 May -1 June, 2025
Cultural heritage plays a vital role in revitalizing and sustaining rural economies. It functions both as a resource and a catalyst for economic, social, and environmental development, while also connecting to broader themes such as sustainable mobility, welfare, and healthy aging in rural areas.
During this two-day co-creation event, students from all study levels of the Department of History and Archaeology, specializing in Byzantine Studies, will present research projects focused on the region’s inscriptions and monuments. Their work reflects ongoing academic engagement with local cultural heritage and contributes to the co-development of future-proof educational programs.
The first day will conclude with a public lecture by a university faculty member, designed to be easily understood by a general audience. This will be followed by an open discussion with local residents, during which older participants will be invited to act as storytellers or guides—fostering intergenerational exchange and inclusive engagement across a broad spectrum of social groups within the local ecosystem.
On the second day, a guided visit to a key local monument will take place. Experts will provide engaging and clearly understandable historical interpretation, tailored to the local audience. This experiential learning activity is intended to promote cultural appreciation and active public participation. It will also support the mobilization of the rural economy through sustainable cultural and religious tourism, and community-based heritage preservation.
